MODERNIZING THE LOOK:
MASTER BATHROOM

Out with the old and in with the new!

Out with the old and in with the new!

The wallpaper and oak cabinets had to go. While we’re at it, how about removing the carpet and installing modern looking stone tile over Shluter water-proofing and decoupling material. The new paint, updated cabinet, tile installation and modern fixtures modernized the look of this master bathroom. This project met the functional and aesthetic needs of the homeowners.

SCHLUTER SYSTEM SHOWER, LARGE FORMAT TILE WALLS, BASKET WEAVE TILE PLAN, VANITY, LIGHTING

DO YOU HAVE A PICTURE IN YOUR MIND OF WHAT YOU WANT? HAVE YOU PICKED OUT THE MATERIAL YOU’D LIKE TO HAVE IN PLACE OF WHAT’S THERE? ARE YOU UNSURE OF HOW TO GET YOUR BATHROOM LOOKING LIKE THE WAY YOU WANT?

These questions come up during project consultation. Having an idea of what you want done is a great start because that lets me, your General Contractor, work within a creative boundary on your behalf. No idea what you want? No problem. We can team with a Designer to help discover your likes and dislikes to come up with your design. The video below shows a finished shower waiting for glass install, updated vanity, sink and tiled floor throughout the bathroom.

Old Jetted Tub and Alcove Shower.jpg

Modern and Bright

Before the project, the bathroom felt outdated with a never used jetted tub and small, dark alcove shower in the corner (pictured here). Replacing the back shower wall with glass opened up the “cave” to allow in natural light. Simple white subway tile is offset by large hex floor tile, all tied together with a mist gray grout. The slipper tub is more comfortable than the old jetted tub and adds a classy flair. Open storage vanity has hidden electrical outlets to power all those grooming accessories. small budget? no problem.

Creating a studio kitchenette can be completed with low cost material. The homeowner can set a budget and I work with them to determine what features and functionality to build. In this case, it was important to keep labor cost down while using readily available products such as the modular cabinets, Formica countertop and Glacier Bay sink with Moen fixture.

FAMILY WALL ROOM

This homeowner saw how one wall of the family room can be redone to give the space a new look, simplify the wall texture, and allow for better access to the backyard.

BEFORE

The wall was accented with plastered rocks with a platform extending out.

It is a distinct look that has a functional purpose while creating an accentuated, finished design if a conventional door won’t really fit.

It compliments the clean lines, colors and texture of modern homes. If there was a need for wheelchair access in and out of the room, installing a sliding barn door may be a viable option.

Though the name implies a farmhouse origin, today there are many products other than wood for the homeowner including modern, industrial material. The hardware choice can also distinguish the final look.

HOGWIRE RAILING RETROFIT

what is hogwire?

It is 1/8 inch steel rods welded together. The material is extremely sturdy. I’ve worked with homeowners who see the benefit of using hogwire when they want to do railing or balcony. There is increased safety and increased visibility through the rail.

Before this hogwire deck railing was installed there was the typical wooden 2x2 picket.

homes evolve

A home can change over time, especially with age-in-place challenges and with growing, young families. In this area, there once was a home theater addition. The owner needed other uses for the same area. He asked me to turn it into two separate bedrooms.

bedrooms

Bedrooms require two ways to exit, usually the interior door and an exterior window. After adding an interior wall to split the theater in half and adding interior door, there was still an egress issue on the former “big screen.”

Adding a six-foot slider door with energy efficient glass allowed for emergency wheelchair egress. For the senior family member who occupied this bedroom, the quality of life improved because a view of the outdoor world became possible.

WOODEN GATES

Wooden gates can be problematic. They get pretty beat up by the elements, animals and people. Eventually they sag and fall off the hinges. Maybe they no longer latch, too. These replacement gates all had upgraded hinges, latches and most importantly a diagonal tension wire.
